Want to know where you can take your dog for on + off leash walks in the Halifax Area? I moved to halifax in the 90's... I'll show you the ropes. 

-Point Pleasant Park-

Legal off leash? Yes, but some areas are on leash and some are off leash, so she the signs for details

Will an off leash dog run up to me? (Very Likely) Even in on leash sections of the park, it's likely. Do not bring reactive or aggressive dogs here. 

Overall walk time? You can walk for hours if you want to, trails loop, it's on the ocean, a never nice place for dog lovers. 

Fenced? No

Tips: If your dog is a jumper or chases runner, know that there are kids, bikes, walker runners. Walk areas are near the tower road entrance. 

Likely the most popular park in Halifax for dog owners. Remember, some areas are on leash and some are off leash. See the signs. Park in the Tower road parking lot, (upper parking lot is recommended for dog people) leash your dog until you get to the off leash sections, don't let them run out of the car, as dogs who are leashed may be entering and exiting from that entrance, and park patrol might ticket you. 

-Citadel Hill Off Leash Park-

Legal off leash? Yes

Will an off leash dog run up to me? (Very Likely) 

Overall walk time? No real walking just a small fenced park that locals bring there dogs to, to play with other dogs. 

Fenced? Yes

Tips: No longer any parking, so you have to try and find a place on the street, and those street have limited parking. On weekends, you can park at Citadel High School and walk over, it's only about 2 minutes away. 

Not a place I like to go, but for dogs who are social, and are not off leash trained, a good option. 

-Frog Pond Trails-

Legal off leash? No. Most dogs are on leash, but people don't care if your dog is off leash and has a great recall. 

Will an off leash dog run up to me? (4/10) 

Overall walk time? Nice long trial but the pond. Loads of ducks. I grew up near in this area, and walked this trail 1000's of times. People are nice, never met an aggressive dog here. 

Fenced? No

Tips: This section have several trails that lead to the Dingle Park, so you can keep the walk going for hours! See image above for arrows. Nice big free parking lot. 

-Dingle Park-

Legal off leash? No. Most dogs are on leash, but people don't care if your dog is off leash and has a great recall. 

Will an off leash dog run up to me? (5.5/10) 

Overall walk time? I grew up near in this area, and walked this trail 1000's of times. You can walk for hours

Fenced? No

Tips: People are generally nice, but keep your dog on leash around roads, and around grassy areas. Many new to Canada families have pickniks here on the weekends, and can at times be not enthusiastic about dogs.

-Old Coach Road (Goodwood)-

Legal off leash? No. Some dogs are on leash, but others off leash. I rarely see other people here. Please keep your dog on leash if it's aggressive. 

Will an off leash dog run up to me? (2/10) 

Overall walk time? 35 minutes walk to the lake. Dirt trail, easy to follow. 

Fenced? No

Tips: See Red circle for parking lot. Can get muddy, so bring boots unless its the dry time of summer. 

-High Head Trail (ocean view)-

Legal off leash? Not legally, but no enforcement. Just keep your dog on a long line if they don't have a great recall. 

Will an off leash dog run up to me? (2/10) 

Overall walk time? 55 minutes walk.

Fenced? No

Tips: See Red circle for parking lot. Can get muddy, so bring boots unless its the dry time of summer. Bring water for your dog. You CAN NOT swim your dog here. It's very dangerous ocean. But really beautiful and secluded. 

-Dartmouth Commons-

Legal off leash? Not legally, but many people bring off leash dogs

Will an off leash dog run up to me? (7/10) 

Overall walk time? 15 minutes walk.

Fenced? No

-Shubie Park (Dartmouth)-

The MOST popular destination for Legal Off Leash in Dartmouth Nova Scotia. 

Legal off leash? Most areas are legal off leash areas.

Will an off leash dog run up to me? (6/10) 

Overall walk time? 45 minutes walk.

Fenced? No

Tips: Some areas are on leash and some off leash. Keep your dog on a long line if it's a jumper.
